When I first started therapy with Dr Parnes, I wanted guidance to be able to help my teen daughter who had mental health problems and was full of anger and resentment towards my husband and me. We started talking about my childhood and I was reluctant to explore that part of my life as my only aim was to help my daughter. What I didn’t get was that to help my daughter not only I had to untangle and break the cycle of unhealthy mechanisms I had adopted during childhood to feel safe but also I had to stop modelling such mechanisms onto my daughter so we could move forward.
Dr Parnes really showed me that to help my daughter, I had to put my “own oxygen mask first” and work on myself.
Almost a year and half later and after lots of guidance on establishing boundaries and practicing empathy and compassion specially towards myself, the relationship with my daughter has been transformed and we are now closer than ever and I am also a much happier person in my own skin.
